First string quartet of Juan Arroyo, created in 2012 at La Chaise Dieu, by the Tana quartet, to whom it is dedicated, quipus means « links » in the Quechua language. This term refers to a system still undecoded, based on the succession of nodes distributed along strings, used by the pre-Columbian populations. By associating quipus with the acoustic theory of string vibration, he came up with the idea of translating the physical data of this object into music. Each movement explores the expressive capacities of different types of string vibration such as transverse, longitudinal, torsion and octave vibration. The width and the longitude of the strings allowed him to organize the frequency space and the interaction between the different movements, thus creating an incredible and enigmatic universe. The world premiere of Quipus was on June 6, 2012 by the Tana string quartet at the La Chaisse-Dieu Festival.
